Preparing Landscape for Winter

Fall is in full swing, and our team is working hard to make sure your properties are looking great and ready for the winter ahead. Because your yard will be in harsh condition during the winter months, it is important to prep your yard, so it comes back healthy in the spring!

A great place to start is to make sure your fall fertilization and weed control application has been completed. A late fall/winterization fertilizer application will promote root growth, reduce winter injury, and promote early spring green-up.

Core aeration and overseeding are also important steps to take. Core aeration prepares the turf for winter and promotes healthy growth next spring. In addition to raking up leaves to reduce possible insect and disease damage over winter, Fall Clean up is the perfect time to remove any dead or unsafe branches and perform structural pruning of trees and shrubs.

The final mow of the season is very important. Make sure to have your mower to the lowest height recommended for your grass to reduce the opportunity of disease. Diseases have a harder time infecting shorter grass.

Fall is the perfect time to plant! Planting trees and shrubs gives the root the opportunity to establish in a lower-stress, moist soil environment. Don’t forget about planting spring bulbs! To ensure vibrant, early spring color in your yard, be sure to get your bulbs planted in the fall. Make sure you plant your bulbs in well-drained soil. With few exceptions, bulbs will rot in wet soils.

Add mums to your landscape to bring color and beauty to your home or property. Make sure to cut back and divide your perennials. Cutting back on tired foliage of perennials sends energy production to the roots, resulting in a more established plant in the spring. This is also a great time to evaluate your perennials and divide those that may be overgrown and crowded.
